Yesterday, I received an email from School Library Journal (SLJ) asking if Bookmarked, the high school library book group, would be interested in reviewing books for them. SLJ has several email/online newsletters. One of them is called SLJ Teen. In that bi-monthly newsletter, four to six teen reviews are posted in each issue.  The students in Bookmarked are already reviewing books for YALSA's Teen's Top Ten (TTT). I require each student to write at least one review every month to submit to the publishers. The student might nominate the book for TTT if they think that it is worthy. I think that the students could use the same review for TTT that they submit to the SLJ newsletter with some nominal additions. The teen reviews in SLJ Teen run about 200 words with half of the review describing plot and the other half describing why the reader liked or didn't like a particular book. I think that it would be a lot of fun to participate. Once we commit, it will be a year stint. I have only asked a handful of students, if they were interested. So far they like the idea, but I have to get a commitment of one review a month from all members before we can sign on.

Then this morning when I opened my email, I had another surprise. Last week I entered an online contest to win a skype with an author. I thought this was an interesting contest because all the authors live in the Los Angeles area, and you could not apply if your school was local to that area. I should be hearing from Cecil Castellucci soon to set up the day and time. I love having the kids talk to authors. This year the students at PFTSTA have had four face to face visits and two webinars with authors. I am not sure which age group she will talk to, and I don't know if it will be during a lunch period or a class period. I will wait to see what she prefers.

Tomorrow I will be filming a thank you note to former first lady, Laura Bush. We have won three Gulf Coast School Recovery grants. The very last of these school recovery grants from the Laura Bush Foundation will be given on March 1st. They are inviting all past winners to attend. A movie is being made with pieces from each school expressing thanks to the first lady. I have two eighth graders on tap to say a few words in the video.

As you can see, there is never a dull moment around here.

This blog post is being designed as a lesson for the English I students at PFTSTA. The teachers and I have collaborated on an activity to celebrate Banned Book Week (BBW). Many times in the past during BBW, I have invited the 8th graders into the library to discuss the banning and challenging of books in schools and libraries. I usually show some videos and share books owned by our library that have been banned or challenged somewhere in the US. This activity always spurs great discussion among the students and teachers. This year we wanted the students to create a written response to the presentation. We thought there was a real world connection if we had the students post their opinion online as a comment to someone writing about censorship in schools. Students Weigh in on Banned Books and the Freedom to Read

Every year, for Banned Book Week, I prepare a lesson for our 8th graders. It was always teacher directed with discussion until last year . The English I teachers and I created a lesson for the students that included research and writing. I pulled the materials that I wanted them to read, and the students would write a very short essay declaring their belief in the need for teens to be able to exercise their freedom to read what they want to or the need for certain books to be taken off the shelves of the library or pulled from the English curriculum.  Above is the slide presentation that I have made for the students. Included in the slides are several videos that I thought would get the students thinking. There are slides with links to specific articles that we want the students to read and use for the concrete evidence to support their stance. Happy Holidays from BRiMS and Bookmarked

I run two book groups at Patrick Taylor. My high school book group, Bookmarked , was created in the fall of 2007 which was my second year as librarian at the school. The students really wanted a library club, but the square footage of the library was so small that I could not imagine how any students could do any actual library work. Instead I created a book discussion group. Not only did we meet to talk books, but I tapped these students to help me with fundraisers and special programming like Teen Read Week. Helping me with these special activities seemed to appease the members. I waited until February of 2009 to institute a book discussion group for my middle school students called BRiMS, or Books Rule in Middle School . Both of the groups meet during lunch, and this year, the school added a third lunch. Now BRiMS is made up of only 6th and 7th graders. Bookmarked has 8th-12th grade students.
